Bormio is a town where history feels vividly alive, shaped by its thermal springs, its medieval heritage and the high mountains of the Alps.

It grew at the crossroads of alpine trade routes between Lombardy, Switzerland and Tyrol, and enjoyed centuries of autonomy as the “Magnifica Terra”, whose towers and palaces still stand in the old town. Its hot springs were already known to the Romans and inspired the Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi. In the 20th century Bormio became a major ski resort: it hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2005, its Stelvio piste is one of the most demanding downhill courses in the world, and in 2026 it welcomed the men’s alpine skiing events of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. Few places in the Alps combine wellness and sport so naturally.

Modern Bormio blends this heritage with a lively mountain atmosphere. The Stelvio National Park, the hairpin road of the Stelvio Pass and the valleys of Valfurva and Valdidentro offer hiking, cycling and breathtaking panoramas.
